ChatGPT Was Alleged to Have Aided Planning of Florida State University Mass Shooting

On April 17, 2025, a shooting at Florida State University killed Tiru Chabba and Robert Morales and injured others. Phoenix Ikner, the accused shooter, has pleaded not guilty. In 2026, victims' families and attorneys reportedly alleged that Ikner used ChatGPT before the attack to discuss mass shootings, firearms, campus activity, and media attention, and that OpenAI failed to flag or escalate the exchanges. OpenAI denied responsibility.

On February 16, 2023, Vanderbilt University's Peabody College Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion reportedly sent students a message about the Michigan State University shooting that disclosed it had been drafted or paraphrased using ChatGPT. Students reportedly criticized the message as impersonal and disrespectful in a moment of grief. Peabody later apologized for "poor judgment," and two EDI deans temporarily stepped back during a review.

University of Illinois' Proctorio Remote-Proctoring Deployment Reportedly Raised Student Rights Concerns

Beginning in March 2020, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign deployed Proctorio for remote exam proctoring after the COVID-19 shift to online instruction. Students and faculty raised concerns that the software surveilled students' homes and devices, created accessibility barriers, increased testing anxiety, and could flag students when facial-detection tools failed to detect their faces, with particular concern for students of color. UIUC later declined to renew its emergency contract.

Texas A&M-Commerce Professor Reportedly Used ChatGPT to Accuse Students of Cheating and Assign Incomplete Grades

On May 15, 2023, Texas A&M University-Commerce instructor Jared Mumm reportedly emailed animal-science seniors that he had copied their final assignments into ChatGPT and would assign zeros or temporary incompletes when the chatbot claimed the text was AI-generated. Students said the accusations caused panic and put graduation or diplomas at risk; the university later said no students failed or were barred from graduating because of the issue.
