Incident 1502: Scammers Reportedly Used Real-Time Deepfake Video to Impersonate Veriff CEO Kaarel Kotkas in WhatsApp Fraud Attempt

Responded
Description: Scammers reportedly targeted Veriff colleague Andrea Rozenberg through WhatsApp with an urgent request and a video call that appeared to show Veriff CEO Kaarel Kotkas. Kotkas and Veriff later described the call as a real-time deepfake or live video clone. Rozenberg reportedly noticed the missing Estonian accent and verified through Slack that the request was fraudulent. No financial loss was reported.
Editor Notes: Timeline notes: 05/01/2025 is an approximation for the incident ID date. First reporting appears to come on 04/14/2026. The incident ID was created 05/22/2026.

Kaarel Kotkas post-incident response

Andrea Rozenberg, who leads our emerging markets, got an urgent message from "me" asking for a quick call over WhatsApp. A video call came in, and on the other end was a deepfaked video of me talking to her.

It wasn't me. Something felt of…

Variants

A "variant" is an AI incident similar to a known case—it has the same causes, harms, and AI system. Instead of listing it separately, we group it under the first reported incident. Unlike other incidents, variants do not need to have been reported outside the AIID. Learn more from the research paper.
