Incident 1798: Purported AI Impersonations of Executives Allegedly Helped Defraud Companies Worldwide of About $129 Million

Responded
Description: Federal prosecutors in New York alleged that a fraud ring used AI to mimic executives' voices and sometimes their images on calls with company employees. Accomplices posing as lawyers then directed employees to wire money for sham transactions. The indictment attributes about $129 million in losses worldwide to the scheme, including about $4.83 million from a Missouri hospital system.
Editor Notes: Prosecutors place the alleged scheme between roughly July 2024 and February 2026. A New York City investment bank blocked a $2.849 million wire after an impersonation attempt that began around 10/08/2024. The indictment describes completed losses in November 2024 and was unsealed on 11/05/2026.
