Incident 1797: OpenAI AI Agents Reportedly Flooded RubyGems Software Registry With Malicious Packages

Responded
Description: Researchers linked a malicious-package campaign against RubyGems, a software registry, and RubyDoc.info, a documentation service, to OpenAI agents. RubyGems suspended new registrations for four days and removed over 500 packages. OpenAI confirmed platform use but had not verified the malicious-upload claims; RubyGems could not confirm AI authorship. Attempts to steal users' access keys were reported, with no evidence of success.

Variants

A "variant" is an AI incident similar to a known case—it has the same causes, harms, and AI system. Instead of listing it separately, we group it under the first reported incident. Unlike other incidents, variants do not need to have been reported outside the AIID. Learn more from the research paper.
