Incident 1666: Oura Smart Ring Purchaser in California Alleged Company Overstated AI Sleep-Tracking Accuracy, Leading to Overpayment

Responded
Description: California consumer Madison Surber alleged that she bought an Oura Ring 4 for about $514 after relying on claims about its sleep-stage accuracy. Her proposed class action says Oura's machine-learning algorithm infers sleep stages from peripheral signals and that she would not have bought the ring or paid as much had she known its alleged limitations. Oura disputes the allegations.

I hold a PhD in neuroscience and have spent 13 years in sleep research. Before joining Oura, I was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley where I built an open-source algorithm that scores sleep stages from polysomnography. It was publish…

Variants

A "variant" is an AI incident similar to a known case—it has the same causes, harms, and AI system. Instead of listing it separately, we group it under the first reported incident. Unlike other incidents, variants do not need to have been reported outside the AIID. Learn more from the research paper.
