Incident 1756: Sixt's AI Rental-Car Inspection Reportedly Led to a £1,659 Bill for Pre-Existing Damage in Manchester, England

Description: A renter at Manchester Airport, England, reportedly received a £1,659 bill after Sixt's Car Gate AI scanner missed existing scratches at pickup but flagged them at return. Sixt pursued payment for eight weeks and threatened collections and legal action despite scans reportedly showing the damage predated the rental. The company canceled the damage entry and bill after an ombudsman intervened.
Editor Notes: 09/24/2025: Pickup/exit scan dated in the published images. Within 24 hours: Car returned. Two days after return: First £1,659 payment demand. Variants

A "variant" is an AI incident similar to a known case—it has the same causes, harms, and AI system. Instead of listing it separately, we group it under the first reported incident. Unlike other incidents, variants do not need to have been reported outside the AIID. Learn more from the research paper.
