Russian propaganda floods popular AI chatbots, spreading disinformation — NewsGuard report
english.nv.ua · 2025

Russian disinformation networks are infiltrating popular AI chatbots, spreading propaganda that could mislead millions, a NewsGuard investigation reported by Axios on March 6 revealed.

The alarming discovery comes as the United States reportedly scales back efforts to counter Russian cyberattacks. With chatbots increasingly becoming a primary source of information, experts warn this disinformation could have dangerous consequences.

At the center of this campaign is the Pravda network, which manipulates AI systems by flooding search results and web crawlers with pro-Kremlin narratives. Rather than directly targeting users, this strategy distorts how chatbots interpret and present information.

According to the Sunlight Project, a U.S.-based research initiative, more than 3.6 million manipulated pieces of content were published in 2023 alone --- many of which made their way into major Western chatbots.

"By filling search results and web crawlers with pro-Kremlin lies, the network distorts how large language models handle and deliver news and information," the report warned.

NewsGuard analyzed 10 major AI chatbots --- including Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, You.com, xAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, and Perplexity. In one out of three cases, these platforms repeated Russian disinformation narratives promoted by Pravda.

Researchers uncovered 207 deliberate false claims, most of them related to Ukraine. The Pravda network, created in April 2022 after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has since expanded to 49 countries, publishing content in multiple languages, NewsGuard reported.

Investigators identified 150 websites connected to the network, including 40 domains linked to Ukrainian regions. Some sites focus on specific topics rather than just regional disinformation, further broadening Pravda's influence.

Interestingly, Pravda doesn't create original content. Instead, it aggregates materials from Russian state media and pro-Kremlin blogs, amplifying their narratives across the web.

With AI chatbots playing a growing role in shaping public perception, the infiltration of such disinformation campaigns underscores a worrying trend --- one that could skew conversations on global events and conflict.
