Texas A&M Professor Misused ChatGPT to Detect AI Text Generation in Student Submissions

Half of the class couldn't graduate because they were suspected of using ChatGPT to write essays
vietnamnet.vn · 2023

Recently, Mr. Jared Mumm - professor of Texas A&M University (USA), put the student's graduation essay into ChatGPT for checking. The purpose of this job is to see which students use OpenAI's chatbot to do homework.

"I will check the students' graduation essay twice, if this is a product created by ChatGTP itself, they will have to receive a score of 0," Mr. Jared Mumm wrote in an email to students on May 15.

After testing, professor Jared Mumm suspected that more than half of the final year students (who graduated but not yet paid their degrees) in the class showed signs of using ChatGPT to write essays. Therefore, these students have their diplomas withheld by Texas A&M University.

Immediately after receiving this notice, the students in the class responded as follows: "The essay in Google Docs has a specific time stamp to prove I don't use ChatGPT. You can check it again" . However, he ignored these emails and said: "I don't grade things written by AI".

The incident angered many students of the school. Currently, a school representative told PC Magazine, Texas A&M University is investigating the incident.

The university asserts: "No student has failed or been barred from graduating due to this issue. Professor Jared Mumm is working with students to determine if AI is being used for essay writing and if so, To what extent". However, the students' diplomas will be withheld until the investigation is complete.

Mr. Jared Mumm said, will create conditions for students to redo the essay for the second time to avoid getting bad grades.

Regarding the use of ChatGPT in the learning process, the Chinese University of Hong Kong previously stated: "Students may be expelled if the school finds out that AI tools such as ChatGPT are improperly used or unauthorized".

Accordingly, students of this school can only use ChatGPT when the teacher allows and must follow the instructions properly.

“AI is a double-edged sword, students should use but not abuse ChatGPT. Use it as a research tool, not a cheat. In particular, do not use AI to replace the human brain," the school's instructions stated.

Some universities even completely ban students from using ChatGPT. Because they consider using OpenAI's chatbot to be illegal, like plagiarism.
