After nearly a week of being cheated of nearly 100 million VND, Mr. N.C.P. (SN 1990, living in Thu Duc City) gradually understood that he was "trapped". He said, on March 23, he received a message from a relative named Th. (living abroad) via Facebook, asked to borrow nearly 100 million VND.
“I carefully made a video call to confirm, saw Th's photo and voice, said that I needed money urgently and would send it back the next day. Believing that it was my relative, I immediately transferred money,” said Mr. P.
When he got home, he panicked when he received the notice of Th's Facebook account. has been appropriated by crooks, sending messages asking friends and relatives to borrow money. Mr. P. made a video call to Th. still pick up the phone, still the face and voice of Th., but the sound is difficult to hear, the image is blurred… Mr. P. continues to call the mobile phone number, then the situation and image of Mr. Th will be clear. . has been cut by objects to cheat.
In mid-March 2023, Ms. C.T.N.Y. (SN 1996, living in District 8) was also scammed by the same scenario, with an even larger amount. She said that while working at the company, she received a message from her close friend via Facebook, borrowing 150 million VND to pay the due date. Due to the previous scam warnings, Ms. Y. made a video call online to verify. Seeing the video showing the image of a close friend's face but it was quite blurry, the sound was shaky, Ms. Y immediately wondered; This person replied “in a weak signal area”.
Y. trust, first transfer 50 million VND to the required account number, video call to notify you before transferring the remaining amount. At the end of the day, not seeing you transfer the loan, Ms. Y called back but the account did not exist. She continued to call by phone number, then both of them knew that the above Facebook account had been appropriated by the subjects.
Many consequences
Recently, police in some localities such as Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, etc. have continuously issued warnings about fraudulent methods of appropriating assets in cyberspace taking advantage of Deepfake technology. However, apart from fraud purposes, property appropriation was quite common; It is not uncommon to use Deepfake to create fake images, videos, and words of celebrities and politicians for bad purposes.
Around the world, many American leaders and even the founder of the social network Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, have also been "attacked" with Deepfake. In Vietnam, there has been a situation where many famous singers and celebrities have been hacked by hackers using Deepfake technology to defraud consumers through online sales advertising tricks.
More dangerously, on some channels against the Party and State of Vietnam, fake images, videos, sounds and words from Deepfake application have appeared to propagate issues contrary to Vietnamese law; even blatantly fabricating about political, economic and social issues in Vietnam. These content are widely distributed through YouTube and Facebook platforms, but for many people, it is difficult to distinguish the real from the fake.
Mr. Ngo Minh Hieu, National Cybersecurity Monitoring Center, said that there are many tools to support objects to create Deepfake videos. At this point, when cybercriminals in Vietnam know more about ways to steal videos and images, crop, use online guided tools to create Deepfake, that's when a wave of scams takes place. 4.0 system, making it difficult for many people to be deceived and easily become victims.
