Incident 1585: Discord's Automated Moderation System Reportedly Wrongfully Banned More Than 8,000 Users Over Benign Images

Responded
Description: Discord reportedly wrongfully banned more than 8,000 accounts after its automated image-moderation workflow flagged harmless uploads, including grids, spreadsheets, chessboards, and game images, as prohibited material. Discord said a bug converted temporary upload restrictions into account bans and prevented cleared accounts from being restored automatically. The company later reinstated the affected accounts.
Editor Notes: Timeline notes: The incident ID date is 07/07/2026, based on Discord's public acknowledgment of the wrongful account bans. The moderation problem reportedly began in May and affected more than 8,000 accounts before Discord restored them. The incident ID was created on 07/14/2026.

This weekend, our safety systems incorrectly triggered and banned around 200 accounts. Everyone affected has been reinstated.

Here's what happened. A thread 🧵

Variants

A "variant" is an AI incident similar to a known case—it has the same causes, harms, and AI system. Instead of listing it separately, we group it under the first reported incident. Unlike other incidents, variants do not need to have been reported outside the AIID. Learn more from the research paper.
