Attacker Reportedly Bypasses AI Safety Filters to Obtain Guidance for Non-Fatal Hammer Assault in Denmark

22-year-old planned hammer attack on father-in-law with help from AI
ekstrabladet.dk · 2025

A 22-year-old man was sentenced to ten months in prison on Thursday at the Court in Roskilde for assaulting his former father-in-law with a rubber hammer.

The Central and West Zealand Police wrote in a press release.

The man hit his father-in-law in the head twice with the rubber hammer and has been convicted of aggravated assault, the police said.

The assault took place on February 5 in a parking lot in Ringsted.

The convicted man planned the assault on the now 56-year-old father-in-law with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). This is according to prosecutor Cathrine Rasmussen from the Central and West Zealand Police prosecution.

  • This is a particularly sensational case, in which the convicted man has managed to use artificial intelligence to research how he could best harm his father-in-law without killing him.

  • He has managed to bypass the blockages that are normally built into artificial intelligence by claiming that he was gathering knowledge for use in a book that he wanted to write, says Cathrine Rasmussen.

It is not clear which AI tool the man has used. Normally, for example, AI chatbots refuse to advise on criminal acts, but in some cases this can be circumvented by using special instructions.

During the case, the convicted person has pleaded not guilty and said that he acted in self-defense. This was rejected by the court.

The motive behind the attack was a problematic relationship with his father-in-law's daughter - that is, the 22-year-old's then-girlfriend. This is what the police write.

In addition to the rape conviction, the 22-year-old has also been convicted of two counts of vandalism.
