Purportedly AI-Generated Hunting Regulation Errors Reportedly Lead to Idaho Citation and Multi-State Warnings from Wildlife Agencies

AI-generated information can be inaccurate
wgfd.wyo.gov · 2025

CHEYENNE --- The Wyoming Game and Fish Department would like to remind the public to refer to the agency website, regulations, and official resources when researching information for Game and Fish. Recently, a number of inaccurate AI-generated search results have been brought to the agency's attention.

Several inaccuracies stem from AI referencing failed legislative bills listed on the Wyoming State Legislature page. Some AI-generated search results reference the bills as if they are current law, leading to highly misleading and inaccurate information being disseminated to the public. In some cases, the information provided in these search queries is in direct opposition to the actual laws and regulations.

"Individuals who rely on inaccurate AI-generated interpretations of Wyoming wildlife laws could face hunting or fishing violations," said Aaron Kerr, law enforcement supervisor for Game and Fish. "Hunters and anglers are accountable for following published rules and regulations. Failure to follow these carries the potential for fines, jail time, or suspension of hunting and fishing privileges."

Search engines, such as Google, that generate AI responses to queries include a disclaimer that the information may not be accurate. It is the responsibility of the individual to verify these responses through official information sources.

The most up-to-date source for information is found on the Game and Fish regulation page, as well as proposed changes to regulations and information on how to provide public comment. Digital copies of all maps and brochures are available for download, and physical copies are available at any of our Game and Fish offices.

Inaccurate information generated by AI may not be limited to Game and Fish regulations. Game and Fish regularly posts updates regarding opening and closing dates, access to public lands, events, and safety messaging. Resources, including signups for our news alerts and newsletters, as well as information on how to call or stop by a Game and Fish office, can be found on the Game and Fish website.
