The State Department said an impostor posing as Secretary of State Marco Rubio attempted to reach out to at least three foreign ministers, a U.S. senator and a governor.
The scam messages were sent by text, Signal and voice mail.
Michael Weber founded North Star Technology Leadership in Western Massachusetts.
He said while Signal can be a great app, there’s no government oversight to keep an eye on it.
"Whereas like I assume if you get an email from somebody, a lot of times now, it will say, this person is not emailing you from your inside your organization,” said Weber. “And so that's become a standard that you see in businesses to help employees understand that this is a legitimate email address. And so, Signal doesn't have something like that. It wasn't structured for that. And so, while it is a great platform, it was unable to create protections that our government and their entities need in order to keep people safe and ensure that people are talking to the people they actually think they're talking to."
Weber said people need to stay alert and vigilant as the misuse of AI to deceive people is likely to grow as the technology improves and becomes more widely available.
