Internet Sensationalized News Scam Targeting Teenagers and Local Residents of Rockingham County
nextdoor.com · 2025

A concerning online campaign targeting students and teenagers in Rockingham County has been identified. This campaign uses AI-created clickbait to lure individuals to websites that deploy harmful pop-up advertisements or launch malicious attacks upon identifying visitors as students or residents of the targeted area. In this instance a student likeness was used in an attempt to launch this campaign.

Proxyware, a digital citizen protection company, investigated and found nearly 100 additional websites using the same tracking code, indicating a centralized operation based in South Africa. This campaign appears limited to Rockingham County, as similar pop-ups have not been observed elsewhere in North Carolina.

It has become increasingly apparent that many digital platforms and sources employ sensational headlines as a deliberate tactic to lure users and generate clicks. These attention-grabbing titles often exaggerate or misrepresent the content they precede, and in some cases, may lead to unreliable or even harmful information.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office urges individuals to exercise heightened caution when encountering headlines that evoke strong emotional responses, promise unbelievable outcomes, or appear too good to be true. Such tactics are frequently used in the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and various forms of online scams. It is crucial to critically evaluate the source of the information and to avoid the temptation to immediately share sensationalized content without first verifying its accuracy and credibility. Taking a moment to consider the potential motives behind such headlines and seeking corroboration from reputable sources can significantly reduce the risk of exposure to misleading or malicious online content.
