Mumbai Man Loses Rs 80,000 In AI Voice Cloning Scam: What Is It, How To Stay Safe
timesnownews.com · 2024

A recent incident in Mumbai highlights the growing threat of AI voice cloning scams. Vinod, a businessman, lost Rs 80,000 after being tricked by a fraudster impersonating his son and a representative from the Indian Embassy in Dubai. This case serves as a reminder of the sophistication of these scams and the importance of vigilance.

AI Voice Cloning: What is it?

AI voice cloning technology allows fraudsters to create realistic replicas of a person's voice. These replicas can be used to impersonate friends, family members, or even authority figures, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake calls. Voice cloning tools are readily available online, putting this deceptive power in the hands of anyone with malicious intent.

The Mumbai Scam

The scam unfolded when Vinod received a call claiming to be from the Indian Embassy in Dubai. The caller, using an AI-cloned voice, informed Vinod that his son had been arrested and faced a harsh prison sentence. To heighten the sense of urgency, the perpetrator put a voice, supposedly Vinod's son's, on the phone, pleading for help.

Overcome with fear and desperation to secure his son's release, Vinod bypassed crucial safety measures. He didn't attempt to verify the information directly with his son, nor did he contact the embassy using a known phone number. Instead, he instructed his office staff to transfer the ransom money via Google Pay, a detail that should have potentially raised suspicion but went unnoticed in the emotional situation.

Only after the money was wired did Vinod contact his son directly, discovering the entire ordeal to be a cruel scam. He immediately filed a police complaint, and authorities are currently investigating, hoping to track the culprits through the bank details used for the fraudulent transaction.

How to stay safe from AI voice cloning scams?

This incident highlights the importance of remaining calm and collected when receiving unexpected calls, especially those involving threats or distress. Here are some key steps to take to avoid falling victim to these scams:

  • Verify, Don't Panic: Never make hasty decisions based on a single phone call. Always verify the information directly with the person supposedly in trouble.
  • Cross-Check and Confirm: If the call claims someone is in legal trouble, contact the relevant authorities directly using a verified phone number. Don't rely on phone numbers provided by the caller.
  • Be Wary of Urgent Money Requests: Legitimate institutions won't pressure you into sending immediate funds. Any calls demanding immediate money transfers are likely scams.
  • Protect Personal Details: Never share personal information or financial details like bank account numbers over the phone unless you are absolutely certain of the caller's identity.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam attempt, report it to the authorities immediately. This helps track down perpetrators and prevent others from falling victim.

By following these steps and exercising caution, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a target for AI voice cloning scams. Remember, a little vigilance can save you in such unexpected situations.
