Deepfake Content! Video Depicts Donald Trump Speaking on Tinubu and Peter Obi
factcheckafrica.net · 2024

Claim:

Donald Trump opposes Tinubu and endorses Peter Obi.

Verdict:

False! The video is a deepfake and originates from Donald Trump's presidential interview in 2017 where he speaks about his first 100 days in office.

Full Text:

A circulating video shows Donald Trump speaking on Tinubu and Peter Obi. The said video depicts him saying:

"Tinubu is one of the most clueless presidents Nigeria has ever produced. If Nigeria must make progress they must look for young, smart leaders like Peter Obi who has an understanding of how economics works in governance and in diplomacy."

"Not old men who can't stand by themselves, who would sleep through meetings and conferences. Nigeria needs Peter Obi as their president if they must make genuine progress as a people."

The video ends with an applause from a depicted audience.

As of the time of filing this report, the video has been forwarded many times across several social media platforms.

FactCheckAfrica worked on this report due to the widespread fabrication of stories with images and video that could mislead the public in these political times.

Verification:

FactCheckAfrica subjected the video to scrutiny. We found through NBC News that the video used to represent Donald Trump's speech was originally from his presidential interview in 2017 where he speaks on his first 100 days in office.

A reverse image search using Yandex and Baidu likewise shows that the image was used in a 2017 publication also referring to the one-on-one interview video with Donald Trump.

Conclusion:

FactCheckAfrica found the video to be a deepfake. The video used in representing Donald Trump's speech on Tinubu and Peter Obi is unrelated to the claim. It is from a 2017 presidential interview.
