Deepfake of Bermuda Premier David Burt Promotes Investment Scam Using Royal Gazette Branding

Government warns of AI social-media scam
royalgazette.com · 2025

The Government has warned the public about a fake AI-generated video circulating on social media.

The video, which was seen on Facebook, included branding that falsely suggested it was related to a report in The Royal Gazette and featured imagery of David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, as well as a claim about a government investment scheme.

A spokeswoman for the Cabinet Office warned that the video was a scam and that fraudulent accounts were using AI-generated images to mislead or exploit the public.

She added that the posts or direct messages often used the likeness of public personalities and copied the design of news outlets to seem legitimate.

The Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: “With the rise of artificial intelligence, fake videos, false representations and messages are becoming more common.

“Unfortunately, individuals have been scammed in the past and we urge all residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant when online.”

She added: “It is crucial to verify the authenticity of any social-media account, particularly if it is claiming to represent the Premier or any other Government of Bermuda official. Only trust information from verified sources.

“Lastly, if anyone receives the referenced fake AI post, they should report it directly on the platform.

“As a reminder, no government official will ever use social media to promote an investment.

“The public are once again encouraged to only rely on official information and official advisories from the Government of Bermuda.”
