NHK announced on the 12th that it would end its multilingual subtitle service for live streaming of English international TV broadcasts on its official website and elsewhere on the 10th. The service had been using Google's artificial intelligence (AI) translation function, but the reason given was that in a broadcast on the 10th reporting China's reaction to the Japan-US summit, some of the Chinese subtitles for the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture were displayed as "Diaoyu Islands," the Chinese name for the islands.
The service used AI translation to automatically convert English subtitles created from the audio of international broadcasts into 10 different languages, including Chinese and Ukrainian, and displayed them in real time.
