(Havre) Local business Sugar and Dice, a game and coffee store in the Holiday Village Mall, says that they were recently the victim of an over the phone scam which compromised bank details and monetary losses from the store.
This scam, however, is utilizing a new way of tricking people: AI voice replication. We spoke with store owner Kevin Zorn.
“My employee received a call on his personal cell phone from what he believed was his personal cell phone. I didn’t call him of course, they had also duped my number meaning they had both of our personal cells. On that line he heard what he claims was my voice, he said it sounded just like me, and that they asked me questions and I assured him with a warrant and that he should follow their instructions”
Zorn says that he does not blame this employee for the incident, and instead commended his loyalty to the store for taking strenuous actions that he believed was just protecting the business and his boss.
Zorn also stated that he does not believe that the business operations will cease due to the scam, and that the store will make a recovery.
