It's exceedingly rare to hear a technology executive express anything besides awe when it comes to artificial intelligence these days. But while WiseTech Global chief executive Richard White has described the impact of AI as ‘unstoppable’, he's also experienced firsthand the threat the technology can pose when used by bad actors.
“Last week three different staff members were confronted by a WhatsApp call with me on video telling them to give them some money,” White told the Australian Shareholders’ Association (ASA) conference on Monday, adding all staff were targeted individually. “Luckily they’re all tech guys so they knew immediately it wasn’t me and they were talking to me on Teams saying, ‘it’s not you, right?’”
While those attempts were scuppered, another anecdote highlighted how convincing the technology, which White has previously refrained from commenting on, has become.
As part of the $33 bilion logistics software company's half year results, White and WiseTech CFO Andrew Cartledge created their own avatars and used AI to translate their presentations into Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin.
