One in Six Congresswomen Have Reportedly Been Targeted by AI-Generated Nonconsensual Intimate Imagery

A study by the American Sunlight Project is reported to have found that one in six Congresswomen were targeted by AI-generated nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII) shared on deepfake websites. The study reports having found 35,000 mentions of explicit content involving 26 members of Congress, with 25 being women. Women were 70 times more likely than men to be victimized, according to the report.

Dutch reporting in March 2024 identified roughly 70–80 prominent women, including politicians, presenters, athletes, celebrities, and members of the royal family, as reportedly depicted in pornographic deepfake videos made by using AI to place their faces on performers' bodies. Some videos had more than 100,000 views. Several women said they had not known the videos existed and filed or planned police reports.

Female politicians in the United Kingdom, including Angela Rayner, Gillian Keegan, Penny Mordaunt, Priti Patel, Stella Creasy, and Dehenna Davison, have reportedly been targeted by non-consensual, purportedly AI-generated deepfake pornography. The images, which some accounts suggest may have circulated online for an extended period, were reported to have caused distress and, in at least some instances, to have prompted reports to or involvement by law enforcement.

Lower Saxony CDU Employee Allegedly Shared Sexualized Purported Deepfake of Colleague in Internal WhatsApp Group

A senior employee of the CDU parliamentary faction in Lower Saxony allegedly posted a purportedly AI-generated sexualized deepfake of a female colleague in an internal WhatsApp group. Prosecutors later said the video appeared to be an AI montage created by inserting a real image of the woman into a bikini-dance clip. The employee was reportedly later dismissed.
