Purportedly Taxpayer-Funded Deloitte Report for Australian Government Contains Alleged AI-Generated Citations and Fabricated Legal Quote

Australian academics reportedly identified fabricated references and a misattributed legal quote in a $439,000 Deloitte report for the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations on welfare compliance. Deleted citations allegedly referred to non-existent works, and a Federal Court judgment was misstated. Deloitte later acknowledged limited use of generative AI in preparing the report and issued a corrected version with a partial refund.

Researchers at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) report that Operation Overload (also known as Matryoshka or Storm-1679) is a Russian-aligned campaign leveraging purported AI-generated voiceovers and visual impersonations to spread false or inflammatory content across platforms. The campaign reportedly involved at least 135 discrete posts analyzed by ISD in early 2025 targeting institutions and individuals, including one purported viral video claiming USAID funded celebrity trips to Ukraine (see Incident 1061).

Grammarly's AI Expert Review Allegedly Used Journalists' and Authors' Names Without Consent

Grammarly's Expert Review feature allegedly used a large language model to generate editing suggestions presented under the names of journalists, authors, and academics without their consent. A federal class action filed by Julia Angwin claimed the feature misappropriated identities for commercial gain and attributed advice the named individuals never gave.
