AkiraBot Reportedly Used OpenAI to Spam Website Chats and Contact Forms at Scale

SentinelLabs reported that unknown operators used AkiraBot, a Python framework, plus OpenAI's chat API to generate customized SEO spam and bypass CAPTCHAs, posting via SMB websites' contact forms and Reamaze-style chat widgets. Researchers assessed >400k domains were targeted and ≥80k successfully spammed since 09/01/2024. OpenAI said the API key was disabled after disclosure.

Call center agents, trained with AI-driven persuasion tactics, convinced individuals to invest more money while falsely promising profits. Many reportedly lost their life savings, with the total losses reaching $35M across more than 6,000 victims.

Mohammed Yusuf, a small-business operator in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, reportedly lost about ₦150,000 (~US$108.86) after responding to a purportedly AI-generated TikTok ad impersonating digital payments company OPay. The ad allegedly promised a free payment terminal and cash grant. A caller reportedly posing as OPay staff requested a one-time password; unauthorized betting-voucher transactions reportedly depleted nearly all the operator's business capital.
